Onion sets are a convenient way to get a jump start on your onion crop. They're not mature onions, but specially prepared young onions that have gone dormant. This dormancy period is like a pause button on their growth. Once planted in your garden, they'll quickly establish themselves and develop into large, delicious onions by around summer solstice.

Planting Guide:
Plant onion sets 4-6 weeks before the last spring frost in your area. This allows them to establish roots before hot weather arrives.
Pick a sunny spot in your garden that gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. Onions prefer well-draining soil. If your soil is heavy clay, consider amending it with compost or other organic matter to improve drainage.
You can prepare the soil by loosening it with a rake or hoe. A little light fertilizer can be helpful for onion growth.
Make shallow trenches about 1-2 inches deep and 12-18 inches apart.
Plant the onion sets with the pointy end facing up, spacing them 4-5 inches apart within the trenches.
Gently cover the sets with soil, leaving the pointed tips exposed.
