Bugloss 'Jack Frost,' is—as Bob Ross might say–a happy accident. Resulting from a natural genetic mutation of another cultivar of Brunnera macrophylla, 'Jack Frost' has some of the most intense silver leaves you'll find in a shade garden. In 2012, it was named Perennial Plant of the Year for its desirable attributes and consistently outstanding performance.
Like fluffy cushions, the foliage of Bugloss 'Jack Frost' burst from the ground every year, covering your shade garden in metallic silver, heart-shaped leaves with dramatic, dark green veining. Its shimmering foliage is accented by small, sky blue flowers that appear in mid-to-late spring and attract all sorts of pollinators. 'Jack Frost' forms attractive, mounding clumps that reach a little over a foot tall and wide.
Bugloss 'Jack Frost' does best in shade to partial shade conditions in the garden and pairs well with foliage that contrasts with or plays into its silvery-white leaves like the illuminatingly-bright Japanese Forest Grass or the dark green fronds of the Japanese Painted Fern. Water your Bugloss thoroughly and deeply throughout the growing season.
