What do alley cats have to do with the iconic redbud trees? If you're anything like us, you might be thinking "who comes up with these names?" Well, there's a story, and it has to do with the humble origins of this gorgeous, variegated Redbud tree.
Allen Bush, a renowned plantsman, looked out his window in Kentucky one day to a nearby alley, only to find a tree with graceful branches full of delicate, heart-shaped green leaves that were mottled with creamy white variegation. 'Alley Cat' lives up to its name, being a naturally-occurring genetic mutation from a Redbud tree found in a place you'd least expect.
In early spring, tight clusters of deep pink pea-shaped flowers form along the branches, which immediately attracts a plethora of eager pollinators, looking for some of the first nectar of the season. These flowers soon give way to this tree's standout feature: dark green leaves that are speckled and splashed with a bright white color. If you love variegated plants, there's a high chance this Redbud will capture your heart too.
At its maximum height, these trees reach a whopping size of 20-30 feet tall. The foliage on 'Alley Cat' is exceptionally scorch-resistant and loves being placed in a full sun environment. Once established, these variegated Redbuds are moderately drought-resistant, perfect for those preferring easygoing trees for the home garden.
