Lepismium houlletianum (Snowdrop Cactus) – A Cascading Forest Beauty
From deep within the tropical forests of Brazil and Argentina comes one of our favorite epiphytic cacti: Lepismium houlletianum, also known as the Snowdrop Cactus. Unlike its desert cousins, this cactus doesn’t grow in sand and sunbaked soil—it climbs and drapes from the branches of trees, thriving in the dappled light of lush forests.
What makes this plant so special is its elegant, pendulous growth. Thin, elongated stems spill beautifully from a basket, developing a subtle blue cast as they mature. And just when you think it couldn’t get more magical, delicate, star-shaped, bell-like flowers emerge along the stems. Lightly fragrant and gently whimsical, these flowers are a welcome surprise on these epiphytic cacti.
This plant is part of our Vault Collection and carries a bit of Groovy Plants Ranch history—these particular Lepismium come from the collection of Bill Hendricks, making them a true piece of Ranch heritage.
Why You’ll Love It:
- Long, cascading stems with a soft blue sheen—perfect for hanging displays.
- Delicate, starry, lightly fragrant blooms that add a touch of magic.
- Easy to grow and share—propagates readily so you can gift pieces to friends.
- A rare jungle cactus that sets your collection apart.
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers partial sun to shade; protect from harsh direct rays.
- Water: Allow soil to get slightly dry between waterings, but don’t treat it like a desert cactus—it appreciates a little more regular moisture.
- Temperature: Happy between 45–95°F.
- Soil: Use a well-draining mix that holds some organic matter, mimicking its forest floor roots.
Native to subtropical forests, Lepismium houlletianum is proof that not all cacti belong to the desert. With its flowing form and charming blooms, it’s a plant that brings the feeling of a rainforest canopy into your own home.
We’ve been growing a beautiful crop, and they’re finally ready for release. This is a limited preorder—reserve yours now, and we’ll handpick a gorgeous plant for you to take home.
