Cynanchum stoloniferum (Climbing Milkweed) – Rare & Unusual Collector’s Plant
Every so often, we come across a plant that makes us stop in our tracks, grin ear-to-ear, and think, “Now that’s something special.” Cynanchum stoloniferum, also known as Climbing Milkweed or Sarcostemma stoloniferum, is one of those plants—and we’ve been quietly growing them all summer long in our collection house, aka The Vault, just waiting for the right moment to share them with you - that time is now!
These scrambling, leafless succulents are unlike anything else you’ll see in a typical houseplant collection. Their thick, whip-like, jointed stems tumble beautifully from their base - creating a living, sculptural cascade of green. At just the right time, clusters of sweetly scented, star-shaped cream to yellow flowers appear—delicate blooms that resemble Hoyas in miniature, carrying the same milkweed family charm. And later, the long seed pods with silky parachutes add yet another layer of fascination.
We love these plants for their oddball beauty—the way they blur the line between cactus-like structure and tropical lushness. They remind us a bit of Rhipsalis, but with a rare twist you don’t see every day.
Why You’ll Love It:
• Gorgeous, trailing stems perfect for hanging baskets or statement containers.
• Rare, unusual, and nearly impossible to find in the average plant shop.
• A conversation piece for any collector who loves the extraordinary.
Care Tips:
Light: Full sun to part shade.
Water: Moderate during the growing season—let the soil dry completely between waterings.
Soil: Sharply draining succulent mix is a must.
Hardiness: Best suited for containers; protect from frost (USDA Zone 11).
Note: This plant’s milky sap is caustic and toxic—handle with care.
Native to Africa and Australia, Cynanchum stoloniferum thrives in dry, sunny environments and will be happiest when you mimic those conditions at home.
We’ve grown a beautiful crop of these this season, and they’re finally ready to leave the Vault. This is a limited release for our followers before they ever hit the shop floor. Preorder now, and we’ll hand-select the very best plant for you!
