This legendary Japanese dinnerplate variety serves up jaw-dropping, giant blooms that reach 8 to 12 inches across. Each shaggy, twisted petal bursts with wild personality, featuring a vibrant play of rich magenta, jewel-toned violet-purple, and splashy, hand-painted streaks of soft ivory-white and deep pink.

• LIGHT: Full sun; partial sun
  
• WATER: Water deeply and thoroughly when soil begins to dry
  
• ZONE: Zones 8–11 (In Zones 3–7, dig tubers up after the first light frost and store indoors over winter)
  
• SIZE: 3 to 4 feet tall
  
• GROOVY TIP: Because 'Taiheijo' concentrates so much rock-and-roll power into enormous, heavy flower heads, do not wait for it to flop before acting. Drive a sturdy wooden or bamboo stake into the ground right when you plant the tuber, then gently tie the main stem every foot as it grows.
