This iconic Japanese dinnerplate dahlia is a total work of living art! Producing huge 8- to 10-inch flowers, 'Akita' features a rich, velvety dark crimson-red center that fans out into petals shaded with warm copper, fiery orange, and buttery yellow—finishing off with crisp, pale yellow or white tips. The pointed, slightly twisted petals give each massive bloom a dynamic starburst appearance that radiates like a crackling campfire in the cool autumn air.

• LIGHT: Full sun; partial sun
• WATER: Water deeply and thoroughly when soil begins to dry
• ZONE: Zones 8–11 (In Zones 3–7, dig tubers up after the first light frost and store indoors over winter)
• SIZE: 3.5 to 4.5 feet tall
• GROOVY TIP: 'Akita' is famous for its wild color shifting! Early in the season, the blooms will lean heavily into deep crimson and dark bronze, but as the nights cool down in late summer and early fall, the yellow and pale tips become much more pronounced. To showcase this incredible sunset spectrum, plant 'Akita' alongside rich purple or dark foliage companions (like dark Heuchera or dark plum dahlias)—the cool, moody background highlights every single layer of that fiery color gradient!
